Sixth Form Experience

The school day consists of 3 lessons lasting 100 minutes each as well as morning registration with your form tutor. During form times, you will engage in current affairs sessions, super-curricular sessions, mentor younger students as well as have PSHE. 

You will not have timetabled lessons every period as you will also have study periods in which you can complete homework, revision or read around your chosen subjects. There are dedicated 6th form spaces for students to use during study periods and break times. This includes the common room, study room with computers, and study lounge for group work tasks as well as use of seminar rooms. 

You will be rewarded based on your attendance, punctuality and attitude to learning with increased privileges such as freedom to leave school after you have completed your lessons. Sixth formers may bring their phones to school, but they must be out of sight except for when they are in the sixth form area. Students are expected to dress appropriately for a professional working environment.  

In addition, we offer a range of opportunities beyond the classroom including: 

Extra-curricular Activities  

We want our sixth formers to know about the world outside of SFG. Consequently, we have taken whole year groups of sixth formers to numerous places including The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum as well as the Science Museum. Furthermore, they are able to attend and lead extra-curricular clubs.  

Super-curricular Activities  

Super-curricular activities are those that are related to your courses of study but are not on the curriculum for the subjects. For example, a group of history and politics students visited the Houses of Parliament to aid their understanding of democratic systems. At SFG, we have a focus on creating super-curricular opportunities for our students which has led to trips to London Zoo; the Supreme Court; to see The Great Gatsby on the West End and to Pinsent Masons Law Firm. 

Furthermore, you may opt to complete the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) alongside your three A Levels. The qualification is highly regarded as it helps you to develop your independent enquiry skills, research methods, referencing and presentation skills.  

Careers Support 

There will be numerous opportunities for students to interact with universities and employers throughout your time at sixth form such as at the UCAS exhibition. Additionally, SFG has a strong link to Cambridge University who regularly come into school to speak to our students. We organise mock interviews and managing money workshops to help our students prepare for adulthood. 

Work experience is an important part of your maturation and your future career. SFG has links with The New Statesman publication, Stansted Airport, a veterinary surgery and Princess Alexandra Hospital. In addition, we support students who wish to volunteer with students helping at Harlow Fields School and Abbot Care Home. 

There will be a number of different opportunities available to students to develop their leadership skills when in school which include:  

  • Academic Mentoring - all year 12s participate in academic mentoring of KS3 students 

  • Leading an extracurricular activity – you can choose a skill, talent or hobby to teach younger students 

  • Being part of the SSLT (Student Senior Leadership Team) to help make decisions about the school, aid open events and support the school community  

  • Working on interventions with key stage 3 and 4 students for numeracy, literacy and reading
