Students Accompany Harlow MP on School Tour
Posted: 9th June 2025YOUNG people were pleased to welcome Chris Vince, Member of Parliament for Harlow to our school to discuss a variety of topics about the school and the local area.
Previously, A-Level Politics students took part in a trip to Westminster parliament, where they entered both the chambers of the House of Commons, and the House of Lords, as well as the committee rooms. They also met with Mr Vince, who committed to arranging a visit to our school.
As per his agreement, Mr Vince arrived last week to witness ‘a day in the life’ at SFG, during line-up, break and lunchtime and a variety of lessons. Our A-Level Politics students stepped in as Mr Vince’s tour guides as they accompanied him around the various classrooms.
After the tour, pupils from Year 7 to Year 12, were given the opportunity to sit down with their local member of parliament to engage in a question and answers session on a wide range of topics. Including queries about his role as an MP, points about the local area, national issues and more.
When asked what the students had learnt from this visit, Matthew Yerosimou, Head of Year 12 & 13 and Teacher of History & Politics said: “Engagement in politics among young people is steadily growing across the UK, so giving our students at SFG the opportunity to meet, speak with, and question their local MP is invaluable.
“Meeting Chris Vince MP gave students direct access to someone who represents them and their town, while also showing them that he is down-to-earth and relatable. This opportunity will hopefully serve to bring our students at SFG closer to politics engage in the decisions that affect them.”
